To promote, or not to promote...
Aug. 27th, 2010 04:16 pmThere are some artists out there who decided to release their albums/singles without promotions at all. There are some who will only promote it amongst their existing fanbase. The others were just done via their official press release statements, a few TV spots here and there and let the strength of their tied-in products to carry the sales. These people don't appear in variety/music TV shows and only make a couple of magazine appearances. Most of the reasons quoted are time- they are too busy. They don't have time to promote their albums properly.
So, how effective are them? Is that a good decision to make? There are no problem with huge artists, promotions or not, their loyal fanbase will eat any release from them. So, why should they waste their time promoting? Since they know sales won't increase, thus, casual listeners are not one of their main concern anyway.
Masha is not one of these artists.
No matter how busy he is, he's still trying to find the time promoting. It doesn't matter if he's wearing the same clothes, and talk about the same thing with little variations, to three morning shows hosts. It doesn't matter if he has to walk back out in the corridor and walk back in just to show the viewers it's a different programs (really ji-chan, if you want to do that, at least change your clothes. LOL). It does not matter if he looks tired, with huge eyebags and spaced-out in music shows.
He will still go. He's an old-fashion type of guy. He's still believes in promotion. And maybe, because he's working so hard on his song, he decided to try and get it out to as many listeners as he could fine. That this is his creations. Let's work on this until the end.. And that includes promoting it. He can't let things to chance. I suppose this is why he takes his time releasing his music. He has to make sure everything is up to his satisfaction, then, he has to make sure the promotion also is done correctly.
So, does it work? He has a loyal fanbase. These fans helped the single to a number one spot in Oricon. He has a respectable sales. He can definitely rely on the fanbase alone. But I also notice he has make a nice route for himself in Digital sales. The position always increased after an appearance in TV Shows. Most people agreed that digital sales is a good indicator of the songs that are popular. Physical sales usually shows how popular an artist is, but digital sales usually shows how popular that particular song is. Hotaru is number one in Recochoku chart (week ends: 17/8). In this period, he appears in no less than four tv shows during the weekend. So, the effect is there.
So Masha, whatever you're doing now, do continue with your wonderful creations. I love it.
